Cardiff Signal Intent with Medel Signing

Premier League new boys, Cardiff City, have shown their ambitions this season by breaking their transfer record with the signing of midfielder, Gary Medel, from Sevilla.

The 26-year-old Chile international has joined Cardiff on a four-year deal, subject to his gaining a work permit, joining the Welsh club in their first season in the Premier League.

Arriving at the club for a reported 13 million euros (£11m), Medel’s signing shows the ambition the newly-promoted club have in ensuring their stay in the top flight isn’t just a season-long one.

The signing of Medel comes after the club spent £7.5m for FC Copenhagen's Denmark striker, Andreas Cornelius, and £8m for young England defender, Steven Caulker, from Spurs, proving the club’s ambitious owners are supporting Malky Mackay in his bid for survival this season.

Fans who bet on football note that the South American is a very physical player. Nicknamed "pitbull", Medel was sent off three times in 31 appearances last season and has been dismissed seven times in 90 appearances for Sevilla since joining from Boca Juniors in 2011.

Cardiff boss, Mackay, admitted to Premier League betting pundits that he was delighted to have added the talented Chile international to his squad, insisting he was confident of the new arrival’s ability to adapt to the Premier League.

"We're delighted to have secured the services of Gary, a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder. I've no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Premier League." Mackay said.

"Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga, with 60-odd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup, his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad.”
